Background :

Greggs, Britain’s biggest fast food chain, has reported a 20% rise in first-half profit, driven by growth in its grocery business and tight cost control. The company also benefited from an easier comparison against a softer performance in the same period last year, which added to the scale of the improvement.

Known for its sausage rolls, steak and chicken bakes, vegan alternatives and sweet treats, Greggs has been expanding its footprint through supermarket and grocery retail partnerships alongside its traditional bakery shops, giving the brand a wider presence beyond its high street stores. This shift has allowed the chain to reach customers who may not visit a standalone Greggs outlet.

The company said its cost discipline played a central role in supporting profitability during the half, helping it manage input costs while continuing to grow revenue through its expanding grocery channel.

Greggs kept its full-year outlook unchanged, signalling confidence that the momentum from its grocery expansion and cost management will carry through the rest of the year.

The steady guidance comes as the chain continues to compete in Britain’s crowded food-on-the-go and bakery retail market, where rivals have also been pushing into convenience and grocery formats.

The results add to Greggs’ recent run of growth as the company builds out its grocery presence alongside its core bakery format, positioning it to capture demand from both convenience shoppers and traditional customers.
