Background :
Amazon has requested a permit from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch a new satellite constellation that will directly connect with smartphones. This proposed constellation will consist of 5,105 satellites with launches scheduled to commence in 2028.
This request has been filed a few months after Amazon took ownership of the satellite operations of Globalstar. At the moment, Globalstar provides Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Apple iPhones with emergency satellite services. Amazon will use the radio spectrum of Globalstar to expand and connect with the Project Kuiper low-orbit broadband satellite network of Amazon.
This will raise the level of competition with SpaceX, which holds dominance in satellite internet and the satellite-to-mobile industry. SpaceX is expanding its mobile satellite services by entering into a huge radio spectrum agreement with EchoStar.
But there seems to be no demand for the satellite-to-mobile services. This is because current satellite communications provide text messaging and emergency services only due to a lack of bandwidth capacity. According to T-Mobile, customer usage of satellite services has remained very low and is largely limited to remote areas such as national parks.
Amazon also faces launch challenges. The company depends on Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket to deploy many of its satellites, but the rocket programme has faced delays after a launch pad accident in May. As a result, Amazon has requested more time to meet FCC deadlines for building its satellite network.
However, Amazon’s favorable financial standing means that it can still be able to invest in its satellites. Amazon hopes to use the enhanced system to gain an edge in the emerging market for space-based communication technology.
