Background
Nvidia is reportedly planning to invest up to $3 billion in Lancium, a US power infrastructure developer supporting large artificial intelligence data centres, as it looks to secure reliable electricity for rising AI computing demand.
The investment could start with $2 billion, giving Nvidia about a 20% stake in Lancium. The chipmaker may invest another $1 billion if the company meets targets, including completing key grid connections.
Lancium is backed by private equity firm Blackstone and owns a 1,000-acre clean energy campus in Abilene, Texas. The site is the first operational location linked to the Stargate AI infrastructure project.
Stargate is a partnership involving SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle to build large-scale data centre infrastructure for AI development. The project was announced with plans for up to $500 billion in combined investment.
Nvidia’s potential investment would value Lancium’s land and power connections at about $10 billion. Lancium is also considering a possible initial public offering as early as 2027.
This deal comes amid increased focus on the electricity supply chain in the AI space. The increasing demand for AI technologies and the establishment of new data centers have put emphasis on reliable power availability among technology firms.
Rather than depending solely on power purchase agreements, the companies have started putting money into power infrastructure to get better access to power and also manage the limited grid capacity.
The Lancium investment by Nvidia may give Nvidia a better foothold in the emerging AI infrastructure industry while also catering to important customers and projects requiring heavy computation power.
Neither Nvidia nor Lancium has made any comment on the rumored investment.
