Microsoft formally ended support for Skype, which was a communication platform that created the world standard for how individuals communicated using voice and video calls. Since May 5, 2025, the company has ended Skype services and requested users to switch over to Microsoft Teams Free, an enhanced and co-worker-oriented application under Microsoft 365. This is the end of an era that started in 2003 when Skype usage was at its peak during early 2010s.
The move to Microsoft Teams also makes up Microsoft’s wider strategy to unify its communication and collaboration tools. Skype users will be able to utilize Teams Free through the same login credentials that they had on Skype. At login, their contacts and chats will also sync, thus presenting a seamless switch without any loss of critical data. Non-switching users will also be able to export their content, such as messages, contact lists, and call history, until January 2026.
Microsoft Teams Free is more streamlined and integrated than Skype. In addition to straightforward calling and messaging features, Teams brings calendar integration, shared file collaboration, and group management tools to the table. This makes it an improved option for solo users and small businesses seeking an integrated platform to manage collaboration and communication from one place.
