Belgium-based biotech innovator AmphiStar has secured €2.5 million in funding from SPRIND, Germany’s Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation, to accelerate the continuous manufacturing and commercialization of its next-generation microbial biosurfactants.
This new funding is AmphiStar’s third grant from SPRIND, bringing its total support to €6 million. The award highlights growing trust in the company’s circular model, which turns bio-based waste and industrial leftovers into high-quality surfactants that are completely free from fossil and palm-based materials.
AmphiStar uses fermentation to turn organic waste into biodegradable ingredients. These biosurfactants are a greener option than the chemicals often used in personal care, cleaning, and farming products. By reusing waste and avoiding fossil materials, the company helps lower the environmental impact of daily products.
According to Pierre-Franck Valentin, CEO of AmphiStar, the new grant strengthens the company’s ability to deliver circular ingredients that support the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable economy. He described the selection as one of the five finalists in Stage 3 of the SPRIND Challenge as “an honor and a testament to the team’s dedication to innovation.”
The funding will help AmphiStar scale its continuous fermentation technology, develop new biosurfactant molecules from its growing library, and speed up market entry. AmphiStar’s recent partnerships with Kensing in North America and Caldic in Europe show growing global interest in using waste-based raw materials. These partnerships are key steps toward making circular biosurfactants more widely used.
