Prime Highlights-

  • Vertical Aerospace partners with Near Earth Autonomy to bring autonomous flight capability to its Valo aircraft, expanding into uncrewed defense operations.
  • Near Earth’s technology will integrate with Honeywell Aerospace’s Anthem avionics system already planned for the Valo aircraft.

Key Facts-

  • Near Earth built autonomous systems for U.S. Marine Corps, Army.
  • Vertical develops Valo in tiltrotor, hybrid-electric variants.

Background-

Vertical Aerospace will partner with Near Earth Autonomy to equip its Valo aircraft with autonomous flight capability, as the British electric aviation company pushes further into uncrewed defense and commercial operations.

Near Earth’s autonomous flight technology will integrate with the Anthem avionics system built by Honeywell Aerospace, which is already slated for use aboard the Valo aircraft.

Aerospace startups are increasingly turning to specialist suppliers for technologies such as avionics and autonomous flight systems, a move that helps cut development costs and speed up certification timelines.

Vertical is developing Valo in two versions, an all-electric tiltrotor and a hybrid-electric variant, as it works to bring the aircraft to market. Near Earth, founded in 2012, has built autonomous flight systems for programs involving the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Army and Honeywell Aerospace, giving it experience across both military and commercial applications.

Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft developers are increasingly tapping into the defense technology boom as they look beyond the urban air taxi market, where lengthy certification processes, infrastructure gaps and funding constraints have slowed commercial rollout.

Vertical Aerospace chief executive Stuart Simpson said defense has become an increasingly important strategic market for the company. He said the partnership with Near Earth moves Vertical from ambition to capability in that space.

Rivals Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation have also leaned into defense or dual-use programs as they widen their focus beyond passenger air taxi services, reflecting a broader shift across the eVTOL industry toward military and government contracts.
