Background

The Turkish Competition Board has approved Uber Technologies Inc’s acquisition of the delivery arm of Turkish company Getir from Emirati controlling shareholder Mubadala.

The Competition Authority said Uber’s commitment to invest a total of 500 million US dollars in Turkey is expected to support high-quality employment, strengthen local engineering capabilities, and contribute positively to the development of the country’s digital and technology infrastructure.

Uber first announced the agreement in February, when it said it would acquire Getir’s delivery operations as part of efforts to expand its footprint in Turkey. The approval allows the deal to move forward following regulatory review.

The acquisition follows Uber’s purchase of a majority stake in another popular delivery service, Trendyol Go, in Turkey last year. After the Getir deal closes, Uber plans to combine the two delivery businesses under one operation.

Uber also announced last year that it would establish a software and technology development center in Turkey, backed by a planned investment of 200 million dollars. The latest approval adds to Uber’s growing footprint across Turkey’s technology and delivery sectors.

The decision builds on the company’s earlier investments in local technology infrastructure and workforce development. Uber has steadily increased its presence in Turkey over the past two years. The company says it remains focused on long-term growth in the region.
