Volkswagen India is leaping headfirst into hatchback performance territory with its much-awaited world Golf GTI. It is its rightful debut in a rightful India market. Mk8.5 Golf GTI as a whole import CBU generated humongous buzz and reserved its first 150 units in days when booking was opened on May 5, 2025. The humongous reaction is a testament to growing Indian consumers’ desire for high-performance premium vehicles, especially from foreign industry titans.
But at the other end of the spectrum is the 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol four-pot driving the Golf GTI. Detuning is to a generous 261 BHP and 370 Nm of torque to the front axle via a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch auto. The 0-100 km/h dash is a decent 5.9 seconds, and it’s electronically topped at an electronically restricted 250 km/h top whack. Evidence of this is the receptive body of the Golf GTI, its suspension, and electronic differentials to enable better handling.
