Background-

Tesla is developing a smaller and more affordable electric SUV to expand its presence in the mass market and support future growth.

Sources familiar with the matter said the company has recently approached suppliers to discuss specifications and production timelines for the compact vehicle. The model will be a new design, rather than a variant of the Model 3 or Model Y.

The SUV is expected to measure about 4.28 metres in length, making it smaller than the Model Y. Its compact size and the use of a smaller battery are likely to reduce production costs, allowing Tesla to offer the vehicle at a more competitive price.

Production is set to begin in China, with plans to expand manufacturing to the United States and Europe. This strategy is expected to help the company meet global demand while improving efficiency across its production network.

The project reflects Tesla’s approach to balancing innovation with market demand. While the company continues to invest in self-driving technology, the new SUV may offer both autonomous and manual driving options, making it suitable for a wider range of markets.

Analysts said the move could help Tesla boost sales and attract new customers. By focusing on affordability and accessibility, the company aims to strengthen its position in the electric vehicle market and support long-term growth.
