Background:

Standard Chartered has appointed former UBS banker Raza Jafree as its global head of private client sales. The bank looks to strengthen teamwork between its corporate and investment banking business and its wealth unit. The move aims to better serve single-family offices and ultra-high net worth clients across key markets.

The UK-based lender said Jafree joined the bank on February 2 and will be based in Hong Kong. In his new role, he will lead a dedicated team operating under a newly formed partnership between the corporate and investment banking (CIB) division and the wealth and retail banking (WRB) business.

Jafree will report jointly to Sharad Desai, global head of sales and structuring at CIB, and Raymond Ang, global head of private bank and affluent clients, who also leads wealth and retail banking for Greater China and North Asia.

Standard Chartered said the new structure will allow it to offer tailored investment banking solutions to sophisticated private banking clients. These include single-family offices and ultra-high net worth individuals within the private bank, as well as family offices already covered by the investment banking unit.

Jafree brings close to three decades of experience from Credit Suisse and UBS. During his career, he worked on distributing customised financial solutions across products such as private and public credit, interest rate solutions, and both recourse and non-recourse financing.

The appointment shows that Standard Chartered is focusing on integrated banking services. The bank wants its investment and wealth teams to work closely together so it can better meet the complex needs of wealthy clients who need both access to capital markets and long-term wealth solutions.

By strengthening leadership in private client sales, Standard Chartered wants to expand its reach among family offices and high-value clients, especially in Asia, where demand for customized banking services is growing.
