- Biomethane from these plants will be supplied to industrial customers through the gas grid and long-term contracts, ensuring stable revenue.
- Poland has strong potential for biomethane due to its large agricultural sector, though current production remains low compared with Western Europe.
Background:
Spanish renewable energy company Solarig plans to invest over $400 million in Poland to grow its biomethane operations through its Biorig division. The investment will create a biomethane platform producing about 1 TWh per year, enough to power roughly 400,000 homes.
The company plans to build and run more than 20 biomethane plants across seven regions in Poland over the next five years. Solarig will use a mix of ready-to-build brownfield projects and new greenfield developments.
The biomethane from these plants will be sold mostly to industrial customers, especially large manufacturers, through the gas network and long-term contracts for stable income.
Poland has a lot of potential to produce biomethane because of its large farming sector, but current production is still low compared to Western Europe. According to the Polish Economic Institute, the country could produce up to eight billion cubic meters of biomethane annually, covering around 46% of its current natural gas demand.
“Poland represents a strategic opportunity due to the great potential of its market,” said Piotr Tomasz Kosior, Country Manager at Biorig Poland. “This is a key moment, thanks to regulatory momentum that encourages the installation of biomethane plants.”
Since entering the Polish market in 2023, Solarig has built a local platform for project origination and development. Its current portfolio in the country includes over 300 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and more than 1.1 GW of battery energy storage projects under development.
Across Europe, Biorig has more than 60 biomethane facilities under development in Spain, Italy, and Poland, expected to generate around 5 TWh of renewable energy annually once operational.
Poland opened its first large biomethane plant, the 45 MW Sudzuker facility, which joined the national gas network in September.
