  • BYD is on track to surpass Tesla in global electric vehicle sales, selling over 2.25 million cars in 2025.
  • The company’s low prices and international expansion have helped it grow rapidly, making it a major player in the EV market.

Key Facts:

  • Tesla is estimated to have sold around 1.65 million vehicles in 2025, giving BYD the lead in annual EV sales.
  • BYD is expanding globally, with strong sales in Latin America, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the UK, which has become its biggest market outside China.

Background:

China’s electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD is set to overtake Elon Musk’s Tesla as the world’s largest seller of electric cars, marking a major milestone in the global EV market.

On Thursday, BYD reported that its sales of battery-powered vehicles rose by nearly 28% last year, reaching more than 2.25 million units. Analysts say Tesla sold about 1.65 million vehicles in 2025, which means BYD has likely sold more than the American company for the first time.

BYD’s growth slowed in 2025, but it remains strong. Its lower prices keep demand high in China, and sales are also growing in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

In October, the company revealed that the UK had become its largest market outside China, with sales surging 880% in the year to the end of September. This growth was driven largely by demand for the plug-in hybrid version of its Seal U sports utility vehicle.

Experts say BYD’s growth shows how Chinese EV makers are becoming more important in the global market.  Competition exists in China, but BYD remains a top EV player.

Its rise is making the EV market more competitive and giving buyers more choices.
